In a nationally televised speech last week after learning her party had officially won the parliamentary elections, Megawati finally fought back. She urged Habibie to prepare to step down. “The people trust me to lead the nation,” she said confidently. Megawati pledged to prosecute former president Suharto for abuse of power and to investigate Habibie for possible corruption. In November, an electoral college will elect a new president. With Megawati’s gloves off, there will be plenty more sparring.
