Kahn sent out a disc last year, but many of the 50,000 press and corporate critics found its avant-garde tone grating. Most of them will find this year’s version a lot easier listening-“less intrusive,” Kahn says. He recorded the disc in June while completing the Ashton-Tate merger. The title: “Walking on the Moon,” to evoke the spirit of challenge that accompanied the early days of the space race.

Does this sound just a bit egotistical? “I hope not too much,” Kahn says, pointing out that each musician performing on the CD gets a solo. “It’s important to do things that are away from business and mean something,” Kahn says, adding that he-not the company-paid for the studio time. But Kahn has no plans to try to market his music; he only wants to sell disks with a “k”-the ones that run computer software. “I don’t think I’ll quit my day job.”
