But so far White House officials have been hindered by the Justice Department, which has insisted the note be kept confidential until the department has completed its investigation into Foster’s death. The report is expected this week, and if the note’s contents aren’t disclosed in it, White House officials hope Foster’s widow, Lisa, will agree to release the note.
In an odd way, NEWSWEEK has learned, Lisa Foster has found the note of some comfort, since she believes it confirms that her late husband’s private demons stemmed from his work. One friend describes her as “alternating between anger at Vince and resignation” over his death. Following an annual tradition, Mrs. Foster and her children are currently in Michigan taking a summer vacation with friends from Little Rock. After their trip, friends say, Mrs. Foster and her youngest son, a high-school senior, may move from Washington back to Arkansas, into the house they leased out just two months ago.
