The American dream, right? Except that the FBI brass was livid about the book. “What they have done is personally disgusting to me,” James Fox, chief of the FBI’s New York office, told The New York Times. Fox argued that “Boss of Bosses” betrays valuable FBI methods to the Mafia. FBI Director William Sessions said the book severely compromises efforts to put John Gotti, Castellano’s reputed successor, behind bars and tried to prevent the authors from receiving royalties. They sued, noting that Sessions had approved the book before publication. Last week the parties settled out of court, with Kurins and O’Brien resigning from the bureau in exchange for keeping their royalties. They also agreed not to promote the book during Gotti’s September trial.
